WATCH: Rep. Landsman, Ohio Lawmakers Expose How Trump and LaRose Are Rigging the Rules Against Ohio Voters

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Try And Stop Us convened a press call with Congressman Greg Landsman, Ohio State Senator Casey Weinstein, and Ohio State Representative Latyna M. Humphrey, breaking down how Trump and Ohio Republicans are coming after Ohio voters ahead of November.

The call came days after two Trump-appointed judges revived Ohio’s proof-of-citizenship requirement for BMV voter registrations, less than two weeks before the October 5 voter registration deadline. Secretary of State Frank LaRose has flagged 208,856 registrations for removal, and a new Republican law throws out on-time mail ballots that arrive after Election Day.

“At the heart of our democracy is the idea of one person, one vote, and that only works if you have a really solid set of democratic norms,” said Congressman Greg Landsman. “Trump has gone after mail-in ballots, even though he votes by mail. He has added all this new paperwork. He’s created a federal database where he’s going to go after American citizens. All of it is to convince people to stay home that he doesn’t want to vote, and then to contest the election when it’s over.”

“Frank LaRose has over and over again said that Ohio has one of the most secure and successful election systems in the nation, and his own data found that of all of our votes in the past presidential election, there was possible irregularities in 0.0005% of ballots cast. When called out on that, he went right back into Trump’s lap and said, ‘no, it’s a big issue.’ But again, by his own data and his own words, it is not a big issue. Our elections are secure and fair, and people should have the confidence to vote and should vote,” said State Senator Casey Weinstein.

“Voting should not be a game of gotcha. If you’re an eligible Ohio voter, you should be able to cast your ballot and have confidence that your vote will be counted, period. And right now, Ohio voters are being asked to navigate a number of changes and questions surrounding how we participate in our elections,” said State Representative Latyna M. Humphrey. “You can do your part. You can fill out your ballot. You can put it in the mail. And circumstances completely outside of your control can determine whether that ballot arrives in time to be counted. Now that should concern every single one of us.”
