WATCH: Rep. Deborah Ross, North Carolina Leaders Expose How Trump and Republicans Are Trying to Rig North Carolina’s Elections
Rep. Ross: “The only way we can stop this voter suppression and these shenanigans is to turn out and to have decisive victories, and I’m confident we’ll do just that.”
WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Try And Stop Us convened a press call with Congresswoman Deborah Ross, North Carolina State Senator Jay Chaudhuri, and North Carolina Voter Protection Alliance Executive Director Terence Everitt on how Trump and North Carolina Republicans are coming after voters ahead of November.
The call came weeks after North Carolina’s Republican-run elections board posted new rules to throw out absentee ballots the same morning the state became the first to mail them. The board has rejected most Sunday early voting hours and cut a deal with Trump’s DOJ that puts about 100,000 voters at risk.
“Congress should be checking the Executive Branch, stopping the Executive Branch from disenfranchising our constituents, U.S. citizens, and taking on the muscle that was given to us by our founders as a co-equal branch of government. But that is not going to happen with lapdog Mike Johnson,” said Congresswoman Deborah Ross. “I am a firm believer in the agency of individuals to fight back and do it with each other. The only way we can stop this voter suppression and these shenanigans is to turn out and to have decisive victories, and I’m confident we’ll do just that.”
“Sunday voting serves people who work long hours or irregular shifts, face long commutes, or care for family members. Souls to the Polls is not a loophole; it is a tradition of faith. Removing Sunday hours takes that option from Black churches and from every other voter who depends on it,” said State Senator Jay Chaudhuri. “Voters, not the State Board of Election, will decide this election. The people who rewrote these rules are betting you’ll get discouraged and stay home. The best answer to voter suppression is voter turnout.”
“For more than fifteen years now, North Carolina has been a testing ground for restricting voting rights, gerrymandering, and undermining our separation of powers,” said North Carolina Voter Protection Alliance Executive Director Terence Everitt. “The practical harm from these changes falls hardest on voters with the fewest options: a student without a car, an older voter who relies on a neighbor for a ride, a worker who cannot take time off during the week. The Republican politicians creating these barriers are counting on voters giving up. We are working to make sure that they don’t.”
