WATCH: Norm Eisen, Ben Hovland Hold Press Call Following Supreme Court’s Rejection of Trump’s Mail Ballot Restrictions
Norm Eisen: “That is good news for every American, and for voters who may be wondering: your vote is safe, free, and fair.”
WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Try And Stop Us convened a press call with Democracy Defenders Action Founder Norm Eisen and Center for American Progress Senior Fellow Ben Hovland following the Supreme Court’s decision on Donald Trump’s mail ballot executive order.
The call came after the Supreme Court on Monday blocked Trump’s plan to impose sweeping new mail ballot restrictions on the 2026 midterms, the latest turn in a monthslong legal fight over Trump’s attempt to rewrite the rules of mail voting. Two federal judges, including one appointed by Trump himself, had already ruled against the administration, finding there is no evidence of the fraud Trump claims justifies the rule.
“Fortunately, sanity carried the day. We are prepared. We know many more of these illegitimate Trump administration attempts will be tried. I helped work on 63 cases in 2020s. I’ve told my colleagues to be prepared for ‘double that this year. Get ready for 126 flavors of crazy!’ The Supreme Court’s 7-2 decision yesterday was an unmistakable message that whatever policy disagreements we may have on other issues, they will not countenance Donald Trump’s outright election sabotage,” said Democracy Defenders Action Founder Norm Eisen. “That is good news for every American, and for voters who may be wondering: your vote is safe, free, and fair. You can continue to vote by mail or whatever other form of voting you prefer. But whatever you do, if it’s an option, please vote early.”
“These results are good for voters. They’re good for election officials who are trying to run our elections and ultimately good for our democracy,” said Center for American Progress Senior Fellow Ben Hovland. “But the only reason that was in question was because it was this president and this court. And if you closed your eyes and asked this question at any other time, we wouldn’t have even been waiting for that decision to see what happened. Obviously, we’re glad that it worked out the way it did. We’re glad that the Supreme Court did what was right, but there was also a period where where real damage was done in the space of voter confusion, with people losing faith in the process.”
