WASHINGTON, DC — Elon Musk built a website called Vote Safe that promises to help people “vote with confidence.” But what it’s really doing is harvesting every visitor’s full name, birthday, home address, email, phone number, IP address, and voter registration status, then handing it to Facebook, Google, X, and other tracking firms. Musk quietly scrubbed the privacy language that used to prevent exactly that kind of sharing off the website.

Vote Safe isn’t a one off, either. It runs on the same operation behind Ready to Register, a group that hid who controlled it until reporters traced its origins back to Musk. Ready to Register’s mailers hit North Carolina and Georgia mailboxes this summer stuffed with outdated forms, wrong return addresses, and letters sent to voters who are already dead.
