From 16,000 to Zero: Nevada Exposes Trump’s Fake “Noncitizen Voter” Numbers

WASHINGTON, DC — Nevada election officials told the Department of Homeland Security this week that every one of the 185 people DHS flagged as supposed noncitizens on the state’s voter rolls is a citizen, and that the department had provided nothing of substance to suggest otherwise. It’s the final collapse of a claim that started in July, when Trump and DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin announced more than 270,000 noncitizens on the rolls in four states, including 15,903 in Nevada. Within weeks, DHS officials admitted in a meeting that the Nevada number never got a full review, then quietly shrank it to 185. When Nevada said even those were citizens, DHS called the state’s findings “false.”

DHS has never handed Nevada a list of 15,903 people. It sent roughly 6,000 “voter case numbers” with no names, birthdates, or addresses, identifiers that can match more than one voter because of the state’s recent switch to a statewide registration system. Yet with less than six weeks until November, DHS keeps demanding the state review all 15,903, while Secretary of State Francisco Aguilar says federal officials are using baseless fraud claims to intimidate election officials and deter voters.
