NOTUS: Nearly half the country has a court order blocking Trump's mail-voting overhaul. Now the Supreme Court has to decide whether to let him implement it 92 days before the election. The order would force USPS to screen ballots against a DHS-compiled “eligible voter” list. States told the Court that older voters and people with disabilities would bear the brunt of any confusion, with “a limited window to correct errors.” USPS has already drafted rules to comply — contingent on winning in court.

Zeteo: Democratic lawyers are tracking what they call the “Jan. 3 ploy” — a scenario where House Republicans simply refuse to seat winning Democrats, and Trump knows about it. There are two paths: replacing the House clerk who certifies the new roll of members, or Republicans working in lockstep to challenge results state by state. “It's like tracking a new Jan. 6-style plot every week,” one Democratic lawyer involved in the planning said. Democrats call it unlikely but are taking it seriously anyway.

Bloomberg Law: The administration banned nonprofits from helping brand-new citizens register to vote at the ceremony where they become citizens. A federal judge says that's likely unconstitutional. “The Court is unconvinced that requiring the government to apply the same policy it has been applying for decades… would cause any significant disruption,” wrote Judge Adam Abelson. The ban, quietly enacted in August 2025, banned groups that had provided the service for years. “The Trump administration could not tolerate that act of patriotism,” said attorney Aria Branch, who represents one of the plaintiffs.

Associated Press: The proposed constitutional amendment would let Democrats redraw the state's map to target its one Republican House seat, ahead of a possible 2028 vote. Gov. Wes Moore called it a response to GOP gerrymandering elsewhere; Republicans call it a “blatant power grab.” Senate President Bill Ferguson, who blocked a similar push earlier this year, said he changed his mind after the Supreme Court “weakened” the Voting Rights Act in April: “It felt like the unwinding of any type of democratic norms in the blink of an eye.”

Northern Virginia Magazine: DOJ confirmed monitors will be at polling places in Fairfax and Prince William counties today. Harmeet Dhillon said the monitors were being sent “where there may have been some problems in the recent elections.” She didn't specify any actual problems and did not respond when asked why two largely Democratic counties were being targeted.
